Roots of Resilience: Paid Environmental Justice Leadership Program
October 2026 through June 2027
Explore Washington. Create Change.
Roots of Resilience is a nine-month cohort program for Black and BIPOC high school youth in Washington State. Over the course of the year, a small group travels the state together, sees firsthand what climate change is doing close to home, and builds the skills to do something about it.
The cohort meets one weekday a month for a 90-minute virtual session, plus at least one Saturday a month out in the field. Along the way, you will visit places like Rattlesnake Lake, where the region’s drinking water begins, Mount Rainier National Park to see the shrinking glaciers along the Nisqually Vista Trail, and Washaway Beach, one of the fastest eroding beaches in the world.
You will build your own Climate Resilience Toolkit, learn how community projects and advocacy work from the people doing them, and explore environmental justice in action.
Every participant receives a $900 stipend, outdoor gear to keep, supplies, and a park pass. There is no cost to join.
No outdoor experience is required. If you have never camped, hiked, or spent much time outside, you belong in this cohort just as much as anyone else.
Spots are limited and registration closes September 11, 2026. The registration form takes about 20 minutes, and a parent or guardian will need to complete the guardian, medical, and waiver sections unless the participant is 18 or older.
